THE FOUR STAGES OF FORMLESS REALMS

(Four Arupa-Jhana)
The Realm of the Infinity of Space

To meditate on this stage of formless method. In practice, you have to develop the fifth level (rupavacara jhana) of meditation. First meditate on any of the ten devices (kasinas) with breathing meditation until you reach the fourth stage of jhana. And then wish that any of the ten devices (kasina) will disappear.
To reach the fourth stage of meditation, you will see a beautiful, white, shiny device and your mind will become one-pointed. There will then be no awareness of breathing or any bodily feeling. It is only awareness, the awakening mind, the mind filled with peace, strength and wisdom.
Make the wish of space or air in front of you in the fourth stage of meditation. The mind will investigate the reality of space that it is so vast with no ending. The same way as our life has no beginning and no ending as long as we crave or cling to life and all possessions.
With the wisdom mind you will end the wheel of life for this very last life with knowing the truth that all beings are suffering from impermanence. All suffering can be ended by overcoming ignorance or by knowing the causes of suffering. Then the mind will detach from the body and the whole world automatically.
After investigating the characteristics of space, knowing the true nature of space, the mind will realize that everything in the universe is finally emptiness just like space, going around from arising and disappearing. One will then realize the wisdom or knowledge of the emptiness of space and the universe.

The Realm of the Infinity of Consciousness
We call the fifth stage of Jhana or Argasanan Jayatana (the formless realm of space)
During the fourth stage of breathing concentration, concentrating on a device to change to the sixth stage of the realm of infinity consciousness, the meditator will wish that the picture of device will disappear and will be replaced instead with formless consciousness.
The mind will focus on the characteristics of consciousness, the recognition of infinity consciousness having the same characteristics of five aggregates, which will not last. They are constantly changing and are uncontrollable. Finally, these states of consciousness will disappear with the non-self, just link your own body.

The Realm of Nothingness
With the fourth stage of breathing meditation, focus on any of the ten devices. The meditator wishes the picture of the device to be replaced with the realm of nothingness. When you are deeply absorbed in the fourth stage of Jhana (higher meditation), it is very simple to replace it with the realm of nothingness as you wish.
The meditator continues to focus on the realm of nothingness. The mind will clearly understand that all the universe will finally disappear as the stage of nothingness because it is the law of nature that everything changes constantly and nothing remains in the same condition.
It is the same thing as your five aggregates (body, feelings, mental formation, perception, consciousness). They are impermanent and unreliable, always causing problems of aging and decay, which need constant repair. There is nothing good to cling to even one's own body. They will become as nothingness by the end of life.

The Realm of No Memories, neither perception nor non-perception
The same thing as the latter three realms, formless jhana, with the fourth stage of breathing meditation focusing on any of the ten devices (kasina). The meditator then wishes the device to be replaced with either the realm of perception or non-perception.
The meditator will pretend to have no perception, looking at everything as it is, to detach the mind from grasping or clinging to any body or possession. The mind will recognize that the universe is not lasting. By its nature, it continues in a cycle from beginning to ending.
After realizing the reality of all the universes, the meditator's mind will easily attain enlightenment or liberate from bondage of misery. This is the path to eternal happiness, the state of Nibbana.

Perception of Loathsomeness on Food (Ahare-patikula-sanna)
This realm is most important for the Buddhist monks to recognize and investigate the food before they eat so they will not delude or attach to the good taste of all kinds of food. The mind will become disgusted. It is very good for the meditator to contemplate or develop the reality and nature of food.
Actually, all foods are from dead animals or dead plants which are arranged so they are attractive or appealing to the appetite. All foods originate from dirt and after chewing, they are digested in the body and become blood which is combusted into energy. The undigested food collects in the bowels.
According to Buddhism, it is not necessary to be a vegetarian to liberate yourself from the bondage of misery. However, it is a sin it kill any living being for food or for any other reason.
Analysis of the Body's Four Elements
This kind of contemplation is very good for the intellectual mind, which tends not to believe anything easily and does researching of the physical and mental phenomena. The Lord Buddha taught us to look inside the body and see the true nature of the body.
What we call our bodies is really only a combination of four elements. These four elements belong to the world; they are the earth or solid element, fluid or water element, fire or heat element, and air element which is composed of oxygen and carbon dioxide.
The body is composed together with these four elements from birth and the body needs to be filled with food, water, and air to survive in daily life. These four elements will finally separate to be the original elements which we call sickness and death. This concentration will clear the deluded, ignorant mind. The sprit will detach from the body automatically.
- Nibbana is not for talking.
- Nibbana is not for writing.
- Nibbana is for realizing through meditation.
